Business Visa (M Visa)

I. Scope of Application
These guidelines apply to foreign nationals applying for the M Visa to engage in commercial and trade activities in China, including but not limited to market research, business negotiations, contract signing, equipment installation and commissioning, and participation in exhibitions. Applications shall be processed through Chinese embassies, consulates, or visa application centers.

II. Application Procedure
1. Visa Category Determination
Confirm that the purpose of travel is business activity and select the M Visa.
2. Online Appointment and Application Form Completion
Log in to the official website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (such as the COVA system) to complete the Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China online. Print the confirmation page and application form, and affix personal signature.
Applicants under 18 years of age shall have the form signed by their guardian, with notation of “signed by proxy.”
3. Document Preparation
(1) Basic Documentation:
Original passport and photocopy with validity of at least six months and blank visa pages.
Recent two-inch bareheaded color photograph with white background (dimensions compliant with embassy/consulate requirements).
Completed visa application form and confirmation page.
(2) Core Business Activity Documentation:
Invitation Letter: Issued by a Chinese enterprise or institution, containing the following elements:
Invitee’s full name, passport number, and date of birth.
Purpose of visit, intended duration of stay in China, and approximate date of entry.
Party responsible for expenses (if borne by the inviting party, this must be specified).
Signature of the inviting organization’s responsible person, official seal, and photocopy of business license duplicate (bearing official seal).
(3) Itinerary Documentation:
Round-trip flight reservation, hotel booking record, or accommodation certificate provided by the inviting party (dates must be consistent with the invitation letter).
(4) Additional Supporting Documentation (as may be required on a case-by-case basis):
Dispatch letter from the applicant’s employer (containing position, salary, and reason for dispatch).
Scanned copy of the applicant’s company business license (translated into Chinese).
For group applications of three or more persons, valid trade documentation such as customs declarations and trade contracts may be required.
Health examination certificate and certificate of no criminal record (required for certain countries; notarization and authentication necessary).
Evidence of legal residence (third-country nationals must provide visa or residence permit demonstrating legal stay in the jurisdiction of application).
4. Application Submission and Biometric Collection
Attend the embassy, consulate, or visa application center at the scheduled appointment time to submit materials and provide biometric data (fingerprint collection). Certain applicants may be exempt from biometric collection, including children under 14 years of age and holders of diplomatic passports.
Pay visa fee (amount varies by nationality and visa category).
5. Processing and Visa Collection
Standard processing time is 5–7 working days; peak periods may extend to 10 working days.
Upon approval, collect visa as notified, or select courier service (advance confirmation required).

III. Key Considerations
1. Document Authenticity and Completeness
Invitation letters, dispatch letters, and other documents must contain detailed information consistent with the application form.
Incomplete documentation or false information will result in visa refusal and may prejudice future visa applications.
2. Clarity of Business Purpose
The visa is restricted to business activities and may not be used for employment, study, or other purposes.
Applicants must strictly adhere to the duration of stay indicated on the visa; extension applications must be submitted in advance of expiration.
3. Policy Updates
Nationals of certain countries may benefit from simplified visa procedures (such as exemption from invitation letters or itineraries); specific provisions are subject to the most recent embassy/consulate announcements.
For example, since 2025, citizens of European Union member states applying for the M Visa may be exempt from certain documentation requirements, though employment verification remains necessary.
4. Post-Entry Obligations
Accommodation registration must be completed within 24 hours of entry (processed by the hotel for hotel guests; self-registration at local police station required for private accommodation).
The scope of business activities must be consistent with the invitation letter; engagement in unauthorized activities is prohibited.
5. Emergency Circumstances
In the event of lost or damaged documentation while in China, applicants must apply for the Alien Exit-Entry Permit at the local public security authority’s exit-entry administration, submitting materials including passport loss certificate and diplomatic note from the home country’s embassy or consulate in China.

IV. Practical Recommendations
Advance Planning: Application is recommended at least 1–2 months prior to intended travel, avoiding peak business seasons (such as the Canton Fair period).
Document Translation: Non-Chinese materials must be translated into Chinese and bear the official seal of the translation agency.
Interview Preparation: Certain embassies and consulates may require an interview; applicants should be prepared to clearly articulate the business purpose, itinerary, and relationship with the inviting party.
Verification of Visa Information: Upon visa collection, examine visa category, validity period, and duration of stay; discrepancies must be raised immediately.
