Tourist Visa (L Visa)

I. Scope of Application
These guidelines apply to foreign nationals applying for the L Visa (Tourist Visa) for travel to China, to be processed through Chinese embassies, consulates, or visa application centers. Applicants who require replacement exit-entry documents due to emergency circumstances such as lost or damaged documentation while in China must apply separately in accordance with the National Immigration Administration’s policies regarding the Alien Exit-Entry Permit.

II. Application Procedures
1. Visa Category Determination
Applicants traveling to China for tourism purposes shall apply for the L Visa.
2.Online Appointment and Application Form Completion
(1)Log in to the official website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (such as the COVA system) to complete the Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China online. Print the confirmation page and application form, and affix personal signature.
(2)Applicants under 18 years of age shall have the form signed by their guardian, with notation of “signed by proxy.”
3.Document Preparation
(1)Basic Documentation:
Original passport and photocopy with validity of at least six months and blank visa pages.
Recent two-inch bareheaded color photograph with white background (specific requirements subject to embassy/consulate regulations).
Completed visa application form and confirmation page.
(2)Tourism Supporting Documents:
Round-trip flight reservation or booking record.
Hotel reservation or travel itinerary (applicant’s name must be included).

Evidence of legal residence (third-country nationals must provide visa or residence permit demonstrating legal stay in the jurisdiction of application).
4.Application Submission and Biometric Collection
Attend the embassy, consulate, or visa application center at the scheduled appointment time to submit materials and provide biometric data (fingerprint collection). Certain applicants may be exempt from biometric collection, including children under 14 years of age and holders of diplomatic passports.
Pay visa fee (amount varies by nationality and visa category).
5.Processing and Visa Collection
Standard processing time is 5–7 working days; peak periods may require additional time. Upon approval, collect visa as notified, or select courier service (advance confirmation required).

1. Document Authenticity and Completeness
All materials must be authentic and legible; fraudulent or concealed information will result in visa refusal or denial of entry.
Incomplete documentation may delay application processing; advance checklist verification is recommended.
2.Visa Validity and Duration of Stay
Visa validity must cover the intended travel period; duration of stay shall not exceed the limit indicated on the visa.
Overstay will result in penalties and potential restrictions on future entry.
3.Policy Updates
Nationals of certain countries may benefit from simplified visa procedures (such as exemption from flight and hotel reservations); specific provisions are subject to the most recent embassy/consulate announcements.
For example, since 2024, United States citizens applying for tourist visas to China may be exempt from certain documentation requirements, though individual cases may still require supplementary materials as determined by the embassy or consulate.
4.Post-Entry Obligations
Accommodation registration must be completed within 24 hours of entry (processed by the hotel for hotel guests; self-registration at local police station required for private accommodation).
Compliance with Chinese laws and regulations is mandatory; engagement in activities inconsistent with the visa purpose is prohibited.
5.Emergency Circumstances
In the event of lost or damaged documentation while in China, applicants must apply for the Alien Exit-Entry Permit at the local public security authority’s exit-entry administration, submitting materials including passport loss certificate and diplomatic note from the home country’s embassy or consulate in China.

IV. Practical Recommendations
Advance Planning: Application is recommended at least 1–2 months prior to intended travel, avoiding peak tourist seasons.
Consultation with Embassy or Consulate: Requirements may vary slightly among embassies and consulates in different countries; confirmation through official website or telephone inquiry is essential.
Verification of Visa Information: Upon visa collection, examine visa category, validity period, and duration of stay; discrepancies must be raised immediately.
