Work visa (Z visa)
I. Scope of Application
These guidelines apply to foreign nationals applying for the Alien Exit-Entry Permit (Work Visa) due to employment requirements within the territory of China.
II. Processing Time
The exit-entry administration of the public security authority shall typically render a decision within 30 working days from the date of acceptance of the application for the Alien Exit-Entry Permit (Work Visa). Specific processing times may vary by region and actual circumstances; applicants are advised to plan in advance and allow sufficient time.
III. Application Procedure
1. Document Preparation
Complete the Application Form for Alien Visa and Residence Permit Documents.
Prepare one photograph complying with the standards set forth in the Guidelines for Photographs of Exit-Entry Permit Documents.
Submit passport loss certificate (if applicable), diplomatic note from the home country’s embassy or consulate in China, or temporary identity document used in lieu of passport.
Prepare employment-related supporting documentation, such as work invitation letter, employment contract, and company business license.
2. Application Submission
The applicant shall appear in person at the exit-entry administration of the public security authority to submit application materials and attend an interview.
3. Acceptance and Review
The accepting authority shall examine the application materials; if materials are complete and compliant, acceptance shall be granted on site and an official receipt issued.
The reviewing authority shall verify the authenticity of the purpose of application and confirm the applicant’s foreign nationality through interview, telephone inquiry, on-site investigation, and other means.
4. Decision and Collection
Applicants meeting conditions and standards shall receive an administrative decision granting permission and be issued the Alien Exit-Entry Permit (Work Visa).
The applicant shall present the official receipt to collect the permit in person at the exit-entry administration of the public security authority within the designated time frame.
IV. Required Documentation and Conditions
1. Basic Documentation
Application Form for Alien Visa and Residence Permit Documents.
Photograph complying with standards.
Passport loss certificate, diplomatic note from the home country’s embassy or consulate in China, or temporary identity document used in lieu of passport (if applicable).
2. Employment-Related Documentation
Work invitation letter or employment contract, specifying nature of work, term, and remuneration.
Company business license or relevant registration certificate, to verify the legitimacy of the inviting organization.
3. Application Conditions
The applicant must be a foreign national applying for the exit-entry permit due to employment requirements within the territory of China.
The applicant must not be subject to circumstances specified in Article 28 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law under which permit issuance shall be denied.
V. Important Considerations
Document Authenticity: The applicant shall ensure all submitted materials are authentic and valid, and shall bear responsibility for the substantive authenticity of the application materials.
Cooperation with Investigation: The applicant shall actively cooperate with interviews, telephone inquiries, on-site investigations, and other verification measures conducted by the administrative authority to confirm the authenticity of application materials.
Timely Collection: The applicant shall present the official receipt to collect the permit at the designated location within the specified time frame to avoid expiration.
Compliance with Laws and Regulations: During employment in China, the applicant shall strictly comply with Chinese laws and regulations, and shall not engage in any activities inconsistent with the visa category.
