Private Visa (S Visa)

I. Scope of Application
These guidelines apply to foreign nationals applying for visas to China for non-business/non-employment purposes such as tourism, family visitation, and private affairs, covering the following common categories:
L Visa: Tourism, family visits, or other private affairs (such as medical treatment, funeral attendance).
S2 Visa: Short-term family visits (stay not exceeding 180 days), applicable to family members of foreigners residing or staying in China.
Q2 Visa: Family reunion (stay not exceeding 180 days), applicable to family members of Chinese citizens or foreigners with permanent residence status in China.

II. Application Procedure
Phase I: Visa Category Determination and Document Preparation
1. Visa Category Selection
Select visa category based on purpose of travel to China (S2 or Q2 for family visits, L for tourism).
Examples:
Visiting spouse/children working in China → S2 Visa.
Visiting Chinese citizen parents → Q2 Visa.
Independent travel → L Visa.
2. Online Application and Appointment
Log in to the official website of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center (or the designated system of the embassy/consulate) to complete the Visa Application Form of the People’s Republic of China, print the confirmation page, and affix signature.
Certain embassies and consulates require online appointment scheduling (such as the United States and United Kingdom); others accept direct submission (such as Liberia).
Phase II: Application Submission and Biometric Collection
1. Document Submission
Basic Documentation:
(1) Original passport and photocopy with validity of at least six months (minimum two blank pages).
(2) Recent two-inch bareheaded color photograph with white background (48mm × 33mm; casual photographs not accepted).
(3) Completed visa application form and confirmation page.
Core Supporting Documentation (by visa category):

Visa Category Core Materials Examples
L Visa Itinerary proof, financial capacity documentation Round-trip flight reservation, hotel booking, bank statements (daily average balance ≥ USD 100 per day)
S2 Visa Invitation letter, proof of family relationship Photocopy of passport and residence permit of foreign national in China, marriage certificate/birth certificate, invitation letter (containing purpose of visit and party responsible for expenses)
Q2 Visa Invitation letter, proof of family relationship Photocopy of Chinese citizen identity card/foreigner’s permanent residence permit, household registration booklet/notarized certificate of family relationship

2. Biometric Collection
Fingerprint collection conducted on site (exemptions apply to children under 14 years of age, applicants over 70 years of age, and holders of diplomatic passports).
Certain embassies and consulates require an interview (such as when documentation is questionable or for first-time applicants).
3. Payment and Receipt
Pay visa fee (amount varies by nationality and visa category; for example, L Visa for United States citizens approximately USD 140).
Obtain official receipt; collect visa with receipt or select courier service.
Phase III: Processing and Visa Collection
Standard processing time is 4–7 working days (peak periods may extend to 10 working days).
Upon approval, collect visa as notified (sticker visa or separate sheet visa), and verify visa information (category, validity period, duration of stay).

III. Key Considerations
1. Document Authenticity and Completeness
Invitation letters must contain invitee information, purpose of visit, duration of stay, party responsible for expenses, and bear the signature/seal of the inviter.
Proof of family relationship requires notarization and authentication (such as marriage certificates and birth certificates authenticated by Chinese embassies or consulates abroad).
Warning: Fraudulent materials will result in visa refusal and may prejudice future visa applications.
2. Visa Validity and Duration of Stay
Visa validity (such as three months) indicates the period within which entry is permitted; duration of stay (such as 30 days) indicates the maximum length of each stay.
Example: Visa validity through June 30, 2026, with 30-day duration of stay → Entry must occur before June 30; after entry, stay permitted through July 30.
3. Post-Entry Obligations
Temporary accommodation registration must be completed within 24 hours (processed by hotel for hotel guests; self-registration at local police station required for private accommodation).
Engagement in activities inconsistent with the visa category is strictly prohibited (such as business activities on an L Visa).
4. Policy Updates and Regional Variations
Nationals of certain countries may benefit from simplified visa procedures (such as Japanese and Singaporean citizens exempt from invitation letters for L Visa applications).
Monitor embassy/consulate website announcements (such as the exemption from notarized family relationship certificates for S2 Visa applications by European Union citizens effective 2026).
5. Emergency Circumstances
In the event of lost or damaged documentation, apply for the Alien Exit-Entry Permit at the local public security authority, submitting materials including passport loss certificate and diplomatic note from the home country’s embassy or consulate in China.

IV. Practical Recommendations
1. Advance Planning
Application is recommended at least one month in advance, avoiding peak tourist seasons (such as National Day and Spring Festival).
Group applications (such as family visits) may be submitted collectively to improve efficiency.
2. Document Translation and Notarization
Non-Chinese materials must be translated into Chinese and bear the official seal of the translation agency.
Family relationship documentation is recommended for advance notarization and authentication (processing time approximately 2–4 weeks).
3. Interview Preparation
If the embassy or consulate requires an interview, be prepared to clearly articulate purpose of travel, itinerary, and relationship with the inviter.
Carry supplementary materials (such as photographs together, communication records) to enhance credibility.
4. Verification of Visa Information
Upon visa collection, examine visa category, validity period, and duration of stay; discrepancies must be raised immediately.
